FinTech companies must shift toward investors new plans

Moving forward, the fintech leaders will be the businesses capable of mapping a course that combines high growth and commercial sustainability. According to recent studies, the UK is ranked 4th in the world for the most unicorns, with FinTech being the predominant sector.

Concerns regarding the UK’s broader technology network have persisted for some time. Many leading start-ups are typically acquired by overseas businesses before they can progress and succeed. Over 100 UK tech businesses were purchased by American firms last year. Some industry critics are concerned about this perception enabling vital high-tech companies to be acquired.

According to findings by the Kalifa Review, the UK accounts for nearly 10% of the global FinTech market share. It generated over $11 billion in FinTech investment last year, approximately half of the total in Europe. Innovate Finance ranked the UK as the second biggest region for FinTech investment after the US in the first half of 2022.

Fintech businesses benefit from access to London and the UK’s developed financial services industry. UK customers are frequently quick to adopt new financial technology, like mobile payments and banking. The Financial Conduct Authority also enables businesses to partner with a leading regulator in emerging technologies and work transparently with new companies.

Considering all these factors, the UK is a very competitive region to create a FinTech business and a successful location to grow it further. The funding markets for FinTech businesses have highlighted this opportunity. Venture capital firms have predominantly focused on developing and scaling a company rather than targeting profitability. With accelerating interest rates, inflation and reduced company valuations, particularly in technology, interest shifted the overall mindset.

Today, investors in the UK and European FinTech marketplace are somewhat cautious in pushing aggressive growth plans. In contrast, investors are looking for a clear profitable product and sustainable margins exceeding their industry competitors. Investors are looking beyond customer acquisition rates and are focused more on how frequently current customers use the product, how long before each payment converts into profit and how sustainable the revenue is.

Customer loyalty has become a critical factor. Increased attention toward loyalty and utilisation rates is vital, rather than focusing simply on raw customer growth. Business growth remains critically important, but for FinTech businesses in the UK, it’s not enough anymore. Moving forward, the winners in the FinTech industry will be those who can create a path that balances high growth and commercially sustainable development.
