Preparing for the future: UK Insurtech’s future growth and trends

With the considerable transformation reshaping the insurance industry, the UK is emerging as a core hub for insurtech innovation.

London has been a vital part of the insurance industry for many years. It represents the core of insurance, the focus of innovation in open/embedded insurance, generative AI, IoT and many other disciplines. According to the insurtech report from McKinsey, the UK includes a diverse network of insurtech, with a collective value exceeding £20 billion and contributing nearly £5 billion to the national GDP every year.

Despite the strengths, the UK’s Insurtech industry was impacted by the wider fintech market correction. A further study by McKinsey indicated a 32% decline in funding into UK Insurtech last year compared to 2021.

According to reports from Royal Park Partners, which monitor financial trends, the latest monthly report highlights that the UK is following global and European deal volume trends, with 18 European deals in 2023, compared to 28 in 2022. Private markets typically follow public markets after a lag in time, so it’s positive to see a strong performance this year.

A recent detailed analysis of insurtech by Royal Park Partners measured the performance of listed insurtech businesses, with findings showing direct-to-consumer insurtech, businesses experienced a 14% uplift in 2023. Furthermore, insurtech infrastructure businesses have experienced a 44% recovery rate this year, compared to a 6% decline with traditional insurers.

All signals suggest a global and UK increase in private fundraising and positive valuations in the insurtech scene. This supports the public market recovery highlighted in the McKinsey report and an investor shift towards B2B insurtechs with a recurring revenue model. There is accelerated activity in terms of financial and strategic investors in the insurtech infrastructure market.

New Business Trends Shaping the future of UK insurtech

Global innovation within insurtech includes several key themes, and there are some areas where the UK insurtech may have an advantage over other regions.

The UK’s strong research ecosystem, combined with supporting policies and backing in AI, enables the UK to remain a solid innovator, enabling the integration of AI solutions in insurance. The public and private industries must work together to ensure that UK insurtech businesses can attract European talent, combining the necessary skills in insurance and AI, which was a highlighted challenge in the McKinsey report.

Secondly, the UK has been a regulatory and technology leader in open banking, enabling efficient sharing of data between financial services and customers. UK insurtechs are leading the way in creating methods to share customer data and integrate insurance solutions into interfaces through APIs. This innovation eliminates the barriers to entry and enables customisation of products and services.

UK insurtechs consistently show their potential in many areas, such as cybersecurity and customer experiences. Delivering successful solutions and services in the UK can be replicated across other markets internationally.

The UK has a favourable extended insurance ecosystem, offering an opportunity for UK insurtechs to continue collaborating with other insurance partners, providing IaaS (Insurance-as-a-Service) solutions to non-insurers and other infrastructure services to other insurers. By doing this, traditional insurers can utilise new technologies and digital infrastructure. We continue to see emerging businesses looking for investment and acquisitions to accelerate their internal insurtech innovation plans.

The success of the UK’s Insurtech market is formed on a collective group of insurance leaders transformed by innovation and technological progression in the last few years. Following the report by McKinsey, more is required to ensure the UK remains a leader in insurtech. The government, regulators and insurtechs need to focus on supporting the key areas of the industry. The UK’s technological experience and strong insurance market background have created the conditions to enable the continued success of the UK insurtech market.
