UK Fund focused on accelerating the development of emerging tech

The UK Government has allocated $50 million towards the Research Ventures Catalyst Fund. Based on partnerships with private and other related investors, the fund could generate millions of revenue and support discoveries within the health, tech and science industries. The most creative and innovative minds will explore new methods of working through the fund, mainly due to a lack of potential funding via conventional paths. By adopting such risks, the fund will allow the ability to tackle current challenges, like climate change, while continuing to encourage the development of emerging technologies. The catalyst is open to bids of up to £100,000 in initial funding to enable researchers to develop comprehensive plans for proposed ventures. Eventually, it will generate up to £50 million of investment, supported by the Government with added private and other investment. According to the media, a representative for DSIT stated that the fund will determine the financial model of businesses in stage two of the programme, following seed funding.

Strengthening investor confidence

Financial backing is critical to the research and development of climate tech, which is rapidly evolving as our world continues to experience more climate-related disruption. The funding will support investors to apply new approaches with confidence, and support will enable the development of additional benefits in the battle against climate change. This should encourage investors to strengthen their support for climate tech businesses and funding to provide sectors with the knowledge and resources needed to reduce carbon emissions. Steven Mooney, the CEO of funding firm FundMyPitch, explains that as funds like this introduce, the UK is progressing towards a strong investment market. Startups and SMEs hold considerable potential, and the collaborative efforts from Government, private and other investors to support developing companies with innovative products will eliminate any risks that could impact the development of their ideas. These types of funds can support innovative and new projects and increase confidence from investors.

Delivering new, innovative, agile funding models is critical for today’s world. Many of our historical breakthroughs which have transformed our world wouldn’t have been possible without people who tried something different and took calculated risks. In today’s world, the approach is more critical than ever. Research and innovation represent the path toward multiple benefits and opportunities, from radically improving select markets to delivering new industries. But this effort isn’t possible without the necessary funding.
